Maurandya antirrhiniflora
Snapdragon Vine

Snapdragon vine is a rare vine for the northern part of the Blackland Prairies. It is a quick-growing twining vine that brightens up mailboxes, trellises and entryways with bright periwinkle blue flowers and arrowhead-shaped foliage. This Texas native is not often seen here, because it is not reliably cold-hardy; it can stand brief dips to 15 degrees, but not sustained low tems. It's more common in arid Arizona, New Mexico and south of the border. Blooms last from May to first frost. Use it as an annual (save the seeds and plant them in spring). It will rapidly cover anything it can twine onto, up to about 10 feet. Lots of personality. Drought-tolerant, though it blooms more with regular watering. Hummingbirds, bees and butterflies like the nectar. Types of butterflies it attracts, per the Dallas County Lepidopterists' Society: Common Buckeye (Junonia coenia).
