Cedar Sage
Salvia roemeriana
Only from Texas. Cedar Sage is an attractive red-blooming perennial, known for its especially long bloom period (March to July). It's native only to West Texas, but it does fine elsewhere, too. It won't hike your water bill, as it requires little once established. Plant it under a tree, such as a cedar (hence the name) or bush that offers dappled shade, as it likes part shade. It grows only to about 2 feet tall, so it can be used as a ground cover, too. Likes about any kind of soil. The heart-shaped leaves are aromatic. Hummingbirds and butterflies like it and use it as a nectar source.
