Texas Sotol

The hotter the better for this Texas and Southwest native. This is a good medium-size shrub for year-round interest. Provides interest in winter with its blue-green foliage. Pair it with sumac, salvias, prickly pears and sontolinas for a desert or native look. The spectacular flower spike, with its white flowers, can climb to 15 feet tall. The flowers appear every 7 to 10 years and bloom from May to August. Sotols make outstanding accent plants, either as one or planted in three to five. You also can put them in pots. They also make good security barriers. Keep them away from walkways because of their sharp spines and teeth along the margin of the leaves. With well-drained soil and full sun, they will thrive with little care and little water. That's good, because they grow very slowly. -- Rick R.
