Nutall’s Wild Indigo has pale yellow blooms, and like many of its cousins, does best in the southern states. Nutall’s grows natively in only five states; in Texas, it is centered in deep East Texas, where plentiful rainfall keeps it happy. (Though it likes rain, it also is drought-tolerant.) Grow it in full sun or part shade. Expect the pretty blooms in late winter through early summer. Bees, butterflies and birds like the long seeds. Gardeners like the look of the pretty foliage. Types of butterflies it attracts, per the Dallas County Lepidopterists' Society: Orange Sulphur (Colias eurytheme), Southern Dogface (Zerene cesonia), Eastern Tailed-Blue (Cupido comyntas), Gray Hairstreak (Strymon melinus) and Silver Spotted Skipper (Epargyreus clarus).
