Butterfly Bush
The name says it all: It is a butterfly magnet. The showy, open-branching deciduous shrub (semi-evergreen in North Texas) blooms in spring and summer, attracting butterflies in search of nectar. It has gray-green foliage, which can be useful as a contrast in the landscape. The stars are the lilac seed stalks, which veer in every direction. Despite the veers, the bush is well-balanced and very attractive. For bushier growth, cut it back before spring growth starts. It requires little water once established. It can suffer freeze damage in very cold winters, so protect it. -- Rick R.
