Mostly Texas Natives Nursery -- Lyre-leaf Sage
Salvia lyrata
Lyre-leaf Sage
Need a foliage plant for a shady area? Lyre-leaf Sage could be the answer. This tough native has green leaves in spring and summer, becoming purple-tinged in winter. The large leaves have purple veins and wavy edges. It's a strictly upright grower, and very well behaved. In earliest spring, light blue flowers arise on tall, thin spikes and last until April. Use it in mass as an accent or even massier as a groundcover. It likes any soil, and requires little water once established. It often drops seed that grows into new plants. But it never becomes a problem in our neck of the woods. A trouble-free plant to brighten up a shady spot. Butterflies like it as a nectar source. Herb gardeners report that you can use young leaves in salads, while you can brew tea from the seeds. -- Rick R.
