Lantana montevidensis
Trailing Lantana, Weeping Lantana
Grow gorgeous lantana in minature wth this lovely semi-evergreen shrub or groundcover. Wide-spreading Trailing Lantana flowerhead clusters are available in lilac or white, with yellow centers, and flower from spring until frost. Pair a white with a lilac for a pretty combination. Each bloom is about 1 inch across. Hummingbirds and butterflies like the flowers, too. Outstanding heat, wind and drought tolerance. Practically no maintenance. It makes a great low-maintenance groundcover or as a cascading container plant. Lanata is a Texas Superstar, part of a program from Texas Cooperative Extension to identify plants that are outstanding for Texas. The dark, green, rough-textured leaves are aromatic when crushed, though its an aroma that isn't pleasing to everyone. Throw a sheet over it when the temperature dips to 20 to 25 F. Though the top may die off, it grows back in spring. You also can use Trailing Lantana in containers, where it cascades gracefully. According to Texas Cooperative Extension, a concoction of the leaves has been used in Mexico as a stomach tonic.
