About Mostly Texas Natives Nursery
Unusual, and unusually hardy native Texas plants, organically grown
Welcome to Mostly Texas Natives Nursery, specializing in beautiful Texas native and adapted plants. We hope you'll make this your stop for plants and for talk about Southwestern gardening.
Ours is a small nursery, launched in 2008 after a decade of learning about and collecting plants that fascinated and delighted us. We sell unusual and hardy Texas natives and adapted perennials, along with a few tender perennials that are considered annuals in the northern reaches of the Blackland Prairies. Our plants are for those who want a beautiful, native garden, or a beautiful, waterwise garden, or simply a beautiful, low-maintenance garden.
Beautiful is the operative word. Not all, or even most, of our plants are rare. They all are simply great garden plants -- beautiful, tough specimens that can survive drought and Texas heat, and that once established don't require tons of water or fertilizer. They are gorgeous, low-maintenance plants that save you money.
We are an organic nursery -- no chemical pesticide, fertilizer or growth chemicals that some nurseries use to control plant size. We don't believe in using those and wish more people and nurseries shared our view. Organic is the way to go for the home gardener.
Our plants grow outside as much as possible, which we believe makes them stronger than strictly greenhouse-grown plants. They not only develop a better root system, but they also receive the benefit of rain instead of city water when possible. (This being Texas, however, some irrigation of newly grown plants is a given.)
Water is what planted the seed in our minds of starting a nursery. In North Texas, we see homeowners pour chemicals and water on their lawns, even amid drought. Meanwhile, water authorities build more reservoirs, even though cutting water demand would be more cost-effective. Drought-resistant, low-water-use native and adapted plants are, we believe, the answer. You will hear a lot about that from us.
In connection with the water issue, we seek to educate our potential customers and Blog readers. See our Links page and our Twitter posts to "learn" more.
Your plant will be ready to set out in the garden when you receive it. Or, because we ship in containers instead of bare-root, you can keep the plant in the container for a few weeks until you are ready to plant. (Do, however, unpack the plant immediately upon receiving it from us.)
We add to our collection of plants constantly, so check back with us often.
